Take Your Daughter To Work Day

I am fascinated by graphic designers, artists, architects, and pretty much anyone that is able to not only dream up an idea, but see that idea through to the creation of tangible piece of work.  I have the idea portion down, but am frustrated time and time again when I don't have the skills to make the ideas a reality.

I have a good friend that is an incredible graphic designer.  Several years ago, I presented him with the questions, "Matt, have you heard of Take Your Daughter To Work Day?  I know that I'm not your daughter, but could I visit you at work to see and experience your creative process?"  I think that he initially thought I was kidding, but obliged and I spent a morning with him the following week at his office.  It was incredible to get a glimpse into his world and experience the steps and progression (and revision) in his work.  While I didn't come away with the skills to accomplish what he was able to so skillfully do, I was encouraged by the process.

Tackling html code this week stirred up familiar feelings of frustration... having ideas, but not the skill set to accompany them.  I am encouraged, though, about the process and what I've learned in a short amount of time.

the beginning

www.webster.com definies beginning in this way...

I like new beginnings.  I'm excited about the start of this semester and love the notion that I will be able to tangibly capture and track my ideas and learning through the postings in this blog over the course of the next few months.

According to Semisonic's song Closing Time, "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end."  I look forward to seeing how my growth through this course will lead to other new beginnings!
